LAVERY, Sir John (1856-1941). Irish Painter.
"I LOVE THE CINEMA"
Autograph Letter Signed ("John Lavery") to "My dear Rutter", commenting on his correspondent's scheme for an "artists-at-work series of films."
1 page 4to, 5 Cromwell Place, 4 November 1919.
". . . I love the Cinema and see it as often as my eyes will permit. I think it sometimes hurtful in this respect. Your scheme of an artists-at-work series of films. How interesting it would have been could we have seen Rembrandt Velasquez and co. under such conditions. When I become still older and care less for the ridicule of my bretherin of my bretherin [sic] of the brush I shall lend myself to this project, but today I haven't the courage."
Lavery's correspondent was most likely the art critic and curator Frank Rutter. A member of the Fabian Society, Rutter championed the post-impressionists, and it seems likely that he would have favoured the new medium of film; however, we have been unable to trace any successful outcome of this project.
