"I have to acknowledge your letter together with the article you have been good enough to forward; and to say in answer to your inquiry that my paper in the Nineteenth Century expresses sentiments which I have entertained for very many years, and has been written without the smallest reference to the differences which you mention or to any other matter in controversy."
After his retirement Gladstone continued to write on political and religious matters, and his articles were always keenly read and discussed.
