A rather crushing letter from someone of Gilbert's usually kindly disposition.
"I would gladly endorse your application, but unfortunately I have had no opportunity of ascertaining what your qualificatiions are. If I had seen you act, I might be able to speak in your favour, but I don't see how I could assume the responsibility of proposing you for a very important part without this experience."
