A letter evidenlty written in reply to a horticultural query. From 1946-61 Vita Sackville-West wrote a popular and influential gardening column, called "In Your Garden", for The Observer . Her great garden at Sissinghust, started in 1930, which in her words combined "the strictest formality of design with the maximum informality of planting" reached maturity in the 1950's and in 1955 she ws awarded the gold medal of the Royal Horticultural Society.
"I think your poppy is the opium poppy, otherwise known as Somniferum. They are very beautiful and your plan of sowing them late seems a very good one. It is so nice of you to say that you like my Observer articles."
