GREENAWAY, Kate (1846-1901). Artist and Illustrator.

AU4790

Three working pencil studies, unsigned, of the arm and hand of a child, holding a stick. The most detailed study shows the shoulder and part of the head and ear. Drawn on the upper half of an 8vo page, evidently from a sketchbook.

Undated, probably 1880's.

Kate Greenaway always had trouble drawing feet and hands, and spent many years under the tutelage of John Ruskin, who attempted to instruct her in the proper technique. This page may well be an exercise she did for him; if so he had every reason to be pleased with her.
