"As the end of the fourth year of the Royal College of Music is approaching when several of the Scholarships expire, as President of the Council I . . . hope that you may be able to render the College the aid of your valuable services, in connection with the Annual Examination for 1887. . ."

The Prince of Wales had been instrumental in the establishment of the Royal College of Music in 1882.

The composer and conductor Alexander Campbell Mackenzie was also a distinguished teacher and in 1887 he was appointed principal of the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College's main competitor.
