JOACHIM, Joseph (1831-1907). Hungarian Violinist and Composer.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Joseph Joachim") to an unnamed correspondent, probably a concert impressario, about future concert arrangements.

Trans: "The pieces I am going to play are as follows: a) Romance from the Concerto in Hungarian Style by Joachim b) Two Hungarian Dances, after Brahms. I only ask, before you tell Herr Wolff, or discuss it with Herr Fernow (Am Karlsbad, 19) whether or not our last Quartet of the Evening of Chambver Music with Professors Barth and Hanesmann at the Philharmonia has been arranged fof the 11th April, which I cannot recall from memory. Posslbly the dates may have to be changed. I am making my way back to London before Easter, and would like an answer about the matter as soon as possible."

Joachim, a close friend of Brahms who dedicated his Violin Concerto to him, revolutionized concert performance by subordinating technical virtuosity to aesthetic values. He formed the renowned Joachim Quartet in 1869 with himself as First Violin, which sent the standard for future chamber ensembles. His visits to England, either as a solist or with his Quartet, were always eagerly anticipated and very successful. Of his own pieces for the violin, the best known is Hungarian Concerto in D Minor.
