FRERE, Sir Bartle (1815-1884). Colonial Administrator;
Autograph Letter Signed ("H B E Frere") to an unnamed correspondent, 3.5 pages 8vo, written on Athenaeum Club paper from 22 Princes Gardens, South Kensington, 1 February 1872.
Concerning opening cases of specimens from India at Mr. Buckland's "Fishing Museum in the Horticultural Gardens, S. Kensington." He explains that he has "permission to open a cask of Sharl Jaws, & a box of specimens of submarine wood boring animals , from Kurachee in Sind . . . it would give me get pleasure if you could join us . . . & go over to the gardens with us, for the chance of there being anything of interest to you in the contents of the cases."
In the course of his career Sir Bartle Frere had been Chief Commissioner of Sind and Governor of Bombay. His period as the first High Commissioneer of South Africa, where his conduct was held by some to have been responsible for the outbreak of the Zulu War, lay ahead. At the time of this letter he was President of the Asiatic Society. "Buckland", to whom he refers, is probably the naturalist Francis Buckland.
