In 1835 the author obtained the post of private secretary to Henry Ellis the Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of Persia. His journal spans nine years and provides an interesting account of his time in the region, including a description of the plague in Galata. Furthermore, he proves an observant guide, noting many of the local customs. Stuart is recorded as serving in the Ceylon regiment after the date of publication and later attained the rank of General.
