Gladstone's preface contains a comprehensive contextualisation and analysis of the artefacts uncovered by Schliemann at Mycenæ with the Homeric tales. This culminates in the conjecture that the Acropolis may in fact be the tomb of Agamemnon himself, and enforces Schliemann's theories about the historicity of the Odyssey and Iliad.
By the age of 36, Schliemann, a German businessman and American gold-rush entrepreneur, was wealthy enough to retire from banking and dedicate himself entirely to the pursuit of Troy. This book is a key text of archaeology and richly illustrated with the manifold antiquities he uncovered.
An American edition was issued in the same year - it is unclear which has precedence.
