Written in a clear hand on a single side of a folded 8vo sheet, with integral address, retaining seal with the entwined initials DR clearly visible, along with a neat postmark. 8 Abingdon Street, [London], Friday, [4th March,
Roberts asks that Martin release the drawings which he has requested, and which belong to Lord Wharncliffe, and arrange for at least his views of Rouen and Rotterdam to be available at the earliest opportunity. His tone, whilst firm, is lightened with some suggestions as to possible subjects for future projects.Roberts moved to 8 Abingdon Street, SW1 in 1829, and is thought to have resided there until 1833 when he returned from his extensive journey through Spain. Whilst he gives no clue as to the date of his letter beyond "Friday", it is possible, with the help of a perpetual calendar, to establish the probable year as 1831, since the post mark is given as 4th March."My Dear Sir / I thought I should have heard from you by this time. Lord Warncliff [sp] having kindly said I might have the Drawings when I choose, and which I know I am mainly indebted to you for. I do not know which drawings of mine his lordship has but the two I would select are - the Church of St. [?] at Rouen and the Rotterdam - prey would you let me have them as early as possible as the frames are to make and we take in next week. I hope Whitehall was all right - pray what do you say to Falkland Palace - for your next it is by far the best subject I have yet had - and is the most interesting part of the scene of the Fair maid o Perth? / Yours very truly / D Roberts
