After studying Tropical Medicine in London, Carpenter was asked to "undertake an investigation into the bionomics of the Tse-tse fly ... in Uganda" in the hope of better understanding (and eventually curing/preventing) the disease of sleeping sickness. Carried out on behalf of the Tropical Diseases Committee of the Royal Society, Carpenter thus engaged in a period of research which started in February 1911 and ended in August 1914.
His experience of studying the Tse-tse fly and the other animals and insects living on Lake Victoria is encapsulated in this wonderfully illustrated volume.
