Gakutei (1786-1868) was a kyoka poet and painter. He illustrated several kyoka anthologies but became famous for his bold landscapes which were influenced by Hokusai. The work was originally published in two volumes in 1823 containing kyoka poems as well as portraits of 33 poets. The present Meiji period version which is complete is itself is praised by Hillier for the quality of its colour and the fact the lack of writing renders the landscape even more impressive.
