Wood was appointed to the Burnes' mission to Afghanistan after his successful navigation of the Indus. Whilst there, Wood successfully completed a survey of the Kabul Valley and also discovered the source of the Oxus. However, following Burnes clash with the governor-general he took retirement along with his superior (DNB).
