Order to Vice Admiral Duckworth, 7th March 1809. (1809)

4to. 1p. Salutation - "By the Right Honble. Lord Gambier..." &c. - printed, completed in MS. Signed by Gambier, Given on Board the Caledonia off Rochefort, 7 March

Gambier had just discovered that the French Fleet, which had escaped from Brest on the 21st February had now put into Rochefort. Duckworth had been desptached in pursuit and was now recalled to Cawsand Bay along with Sotheby and the rest of the squadron, "for further orders". These events were to culminate with the Gambier's questionable handling of the affair of the Basque Roads and ultimately in his Court Martial, on which Duckworth sat, and which unsurprisingly acquitted him of all charges.Duckworth's docketing on the verso reveals that this order was recieved "off Funchal March 25 1809".
