Biography of the Elector of Saxony Friedrich Augustus I who became King of Poland. Augustus allied himself with Russia and Denmark to invade Charles XII's Sweden in the Northern War. Augustus himself invaded Livonia with his Saxon troops but was defeated by Charles and forced to renounce the throne of Poland under the Treaty of Altranstädt in 1706. Following the Russian victory over the Swedes at Poltava, Augustus managed to recover Poland where he continued to quarter his Saxon troops and ruled in great unpopularity. A legendary womaniser, Marshal Saxe was one of his illegitimate children.A quantity of relevant clippings, in German, loosely inserted.
