Black chalk drawing with pink and pale blue wash. Signed and dated "John. Paris. 1930" at lower right. Image size 27 x 20.5 cm.
In 1930 John was commissioned to make a portrait of Joyce for the frontispiece of the anthology The Joyce Book. He visited Paris in October 1930 and later described how Joyce had posed "well and frequently", despite "a precise and buttoned-up appearance" which would slowly but significantly diminish with dinner and wine.
This particular drawing from the sittings was unknown before its appearance at auction in London in 1985, where bought by the dealer Patrick King, who shortly after sold it to a London private collector, from whom bought by Maggs in 2016.
