Illustrations. First edition. 8vo., original pale blue buckram. London, Faber & Faber.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper from John Gielgud to his mother, 'Darling Mother, from another actor, with much love John: Dec. 1951'. Gielgud grew up surrounded by actors: his mother had given up a promising theatrical career to marry, his grandmother was Kate Terry, and his great aunt was Ellen Terry, who, together with Henry Irving, formed the greatest partnership on the English stage of their time. Other than Irving himself, she is mentioned more often than anyone else in this biography. A very good copy, spine slightly sunned.
