The Lady of the Lake
EDWARDS Gwladys; SCOTT Sir Walter (1898.)
Available to view at our Curzon Street shop.
Full page illustrations by C.E. Brock. 8vo., bound by Gwladys Edwards, with her stamp on the recto of the front free endpaper, in full green morocco with upper and lower boards decorated with double gilt rules containing a pattern of triple gilt dots, each corner elaborated with four yellow onlay dots around a pattern of stippled gilt dots becoming denser towards the center and finished with a floral design of three red onlay petals outlined in gilt; spine with five gilt ruled compartments and one plain with lettering in gilt, double gilt ruled turn-ins with a pattern of four gilt dots in the outer corners, a.e.g. London, Service and Paton.
An elegant if somewhat restrained design by Gwladys Edwards, a restraint which is either welcomed with relief or rejected with disappointment depending on ones opinion of the more exuberant work of the Guild of Women Bookbinders. Gwladys exhibited with the Guild and is often suspected of being the same 'Miss Edwards' by whom a number of Guild bindings are signed. Very good, the spine slightly sunned, the corners of spine and boards a little bumped, some foxing especially to the preliminary leaves, including the title page.
