A presentation copy, inscribed on the half title page 'To our wonderful friends Dr. C.Belfield-Clarke and Pat - Independence Day, 1965, Accra, Shirley G.Du Bois'. Shirley Graham, who began her intellectual life as a composer, turned to writing and wrote biographies of some of the important black politicians and activists of her times. She married W.E.B. Du Bois in 1951, and they later emigrated to Ghana, being granted citizenship in 1961. Dr. Belfield Clarke was a West Indian doctor who did much good work in his London practice, and was a friend to many of the black writers and activists of his time.
