The first complete publication of images taken for Narahara's first exhibition held in May 1956. It combines two documentaries of people living in extreme conditions: One is of a mining village on an artificial island called 'Warship Island' (Gunkan-jima). It is 480 metres long and 160 meters wide housing almost five-thousand miners and their families. The other shows the community of Kurokami village, living in the vicinity of an active volcano without any access to gound-water. "The exhibition, almost as if announcing a new age of photography in Japan, left a fresh, invigorating impression on those who saw it." (Fukushima Tatsuo: The Time within Times. p. [v]).
