The present work was published three years after the 'Travels in China'. Volume I covers the entire career of the distinguished diplomat with extracts of important correspondence as well as a fascinating account of a duel between Macartney and a Mr. Sadlier (interestingly, the cause of the offence is not stated). The second volume contains Macartney's journal of the Embassy to China together with an appendix giving personal observations about China and the Chinese. Lust 501; Cordier 2391.
