a poem in Nine Books.8vo. 258, [14]. Early twentieth-century red morocco by Stikeman & Co.Hartford: by Hudson and Goodwin,

Sabin 3434. A very good copy of this once very well-regarded epic poem on the founding of America. Such was Barlow's literary standing that the extensive subscribers' list (arranged State by State) includes such contemporaries as Louis XVI, Washington, Franklin, Lafayette and many others (including most of Connecticut it would seem). The triumph of the utopian American dream is here versified and the victory of freedom and individual liberty is held aloft over the failed tyranny and miserableness of British (and dogmatic religious) rule.Provenance: bookplate removed.
