Excellent edition of one of the better novels of Tressan based on the famous 15th century romance; Jehan de Saintré was a histoirical figure regarded by Froissart as the best knight of his day. Tressan was a prolific writer whose output included chivalrous romances such as this one, scientific treatises and satirical verse.The four plates in this copy are before letters; one of them appears without the name of the artist. Pasted inside the front cover is the book-label of the novelist Charlotte M. Yonge (1823-1901), who wrote 200 works of fiction and non-fiction (see the extensive article in DNB).
