translatée en langue françoise, par seu Messire Claude de Seysell... reueu & corrigée. Paris, Estienne Groulleau,

One vol. bound in 2. 16mo (110 x 70mm. ) ff. 16], 555, [13]., last leaf blank, device on title-page, 19th- century French polished calf, triple gilt fillet on covers, spine with two labels and decorated in gilt, g.e.

A pretty copy of this édition partagée (entirely printed in a small italic) of the infLuential translation into French by Claude de Seyssel, based on the Latin version of Lorenzo Valla, and first published in 1527. Claude de Seyssel (d. 1520), from Savoy, was a jurist, humanist and theologian. He was an advisor to Louis XII, to whom he dedicated the translation, was later created Bishop of Marseille and later Archbishop of Turin. As Seysell worked from Valla's Latin translation (he also translated Valla's prologue), so Thomas Nicoll's first English edition of 1550 was made from de Seyssel's French version. The preliminaries include a sonnet by Clément Marot addressed 'aux lectuers'.

This copy has an additional title-page in manuscript to volume II, written in a neat calligraphic hand, probably inserted when the volume was rebound. Adams T680 (imprint of Jehan Ruelle). Schweiger p. 239. Not in BMSTC (French). Only a handful of copies are located in European libraries as listed by KVK and only two locations are given on OCLC/RLIN (Universities of Maryland and Ohio).
