The Adoration of the Magi, illuminated miniature in an arched compartment, on a vellum leaf from a Book of Hours.[Netherlands, c.
NETHERLANDISH ARTIST (1450])
Available to view at our Curzon Street shop.
A fine arched miniature showing the Virgin and Child on a luxurious throne outside the dilapidated stable against a lush landscape background, one Magi kneels at their feet, two others stand to the side gifts in hand, all with burnished gold haloes, the miniature in a gilt frame and surrounded by a full border of coloured leaves and gilt bezants (border trimmed, faces slightly rubbed).
Size of leaf: 120 x 82 mm, 18 lines of text in Flemish on verso in a neat gothic hand, rubricated.
A vivid depiction of the Adoration of the Magi by an interesting artist, probably Dutch, whose work is characterised by the delicate modelling of his faces and by the bright blue and green which he uses to full effect.
From a group of leaves sold at Sotheby's 10 December 1973, lots 16-23, this being lot 18.
