Fine example of German Rococo book illustration. "The transition from baroque to rococo is best observed in south Germany, particularly Bavaria. The Augsburg school of engravers of the early 18th century produced exuberant, freakish designs in the baroque-rococo idiom that it would be hard to match elsewhere. These included many book illustrations" (J.P. Harthan, History of the Illustrated Book,1981, p. 140). Berlinkatalog 155.
