First edition. The motto on the title (Horace Ep. i, 20, vv. 14-15) 'Ridebit monitor...' ) has stamped in above it, and slightly off centre 'Horatius lectori'Following the De Latinitate falso suspecta (1576), and Pseudo-Cicero, Dialogus, (1577), this is the last of three works which Estienne wrote to attack the cult of Ciceronianism. Written as a dialogue, the work is highly critical of over adherence to Nizolius' dictionary of Ciceroniann vocabulary and usage.Provenance. old inscription on title-page scored out; old pressmark Z48; 19th-century book-plate of Adolphe Destappe.Some waterstaining affect the top third of many leaves.Renouard 146, 2.
