Marie-Jeanne Leprince de Beaumont (1711-1780) was a prolific writer of moral and instructive tales for children. Her one regression into fairyland was the tale of Beauty and the Beast found in her collection Magasin des enfants, contes moraux (1757). She came to London in 1745 and lived there for the next seventeen years employed as a governess before retiring to Switzerland.vol 1 ends p. 340
