Two engraved frontispieces by Vidal, one engraved portrait of La Fontaine after Rigaud, 80 engraved plates after Eisen, 43 engraved culs- de- lampe, two engraved title vignettes and two engraved head- pieces. 2 vols. 8vo. xiv, 200, 13pp. [1]f.; vii, 284pp. Contemporary red morocco, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt floral ornament at each corner, flat spines gilt in compartments, olive morocco labels, g.e. (extremities rubbed).
A good, wide-margined copy from one of the best conterfeit editions of the famous Fermiers-Généraux 1762 edition of La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles. This copy holds the 18th verse of the Diable de Papefiguière which was often omitted. Some of the culs-de lampes are not in fact copies of those in the 1762 edition but original compositions (see Reynaud).Cohen-de Ricci 571/72. Rochambeau 90.
