Printer's sphere device on title-page.12mo. ff. 180pp. ff. Contemporary vellum.
Second or third edition of Sorbière's account of his travels in England which he visited in 1663 at the invitation of the philosopher John Hobbes. It is valuable for his observations on English scientists whom he met there, such as Robert Boyle, and on scientific discoveries, and also on the beginnings of the Royal Society as he was present at one of its earliest meetings. The book aroused great controversy because of the author's criticism of English institutions and was responsible for numerous diplomatic dispatches and apologies; Louis XIV was keen to cultivate English good will and so ordered the book to be suppressed. This is one of two editions printed in 1666; the other one had 192pp. and a folding plate. Long contemporary ownership inscription on fly-leaf.Brunet V, 455.
