Autograph Letter Signed (“George du Maurier”) to Ernest Gambart, 1 page 8vo in French, 27 Church Row, Hampstead, 30 April n.y. [c. 1874-5].
The cartoonist and author du Maurier here writes to his friend Gambart, the renowned print publisher and art dealer, on the subject of meeting Lawrence Alma-Tadema and admiring his work. He also expresses his hopes that he will see Gambart in the summer and humorously mentions the impact his lengthy hangovers can have on his social life. As an art publisher Gambart knew some of the greatest artists of the day, counting Millais, Holman Hunt, Landseer and Frith amongst his friends. He branched out into selling original art work in 1849 and became instrumental in establishing a number of artists’ careers, perhaps most notably Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s, whom he first met in 1864.
Trans: “You are very kind to think of me – I am sending you a monocle which fits me perfectly. I hope to see you often this summer – as to the benevolent fund dinner, I am forced to miss it because of the effect these affairs have on me the following day (and the day after that). I went to see your friend Tadema and his paintings which are admirable – He has a portrait of you in Roman dress which is striking; it makes me feel that you have just heard a prophet speak. Tadema is not one of those who diminishes with success. Did you ever hear from de Soria? It seems that he is making quite a stir in Paris this winter. Hoping you will shake his hand soon [. . .]”
The painting du Maurier refers to is probably The Picture Gallery (1874) which features a central figure modelled on Gambart, suggesting this letter was penned after this date. The “de Soria” mentioned is likely Jules Diaz de Soria, talented baritone singer and friend of Gambart who knew Charles Gounod and achieved renown around this time. Aguttes, Neuilly-sur-Seine, offered a number of letters to Gambart for sale in their December 2013 catalogue, including those from de Soria detailing his travels and disappointments in love.
