Modern Books and Manuscripts
|
There are 2640 titles in this department.
The Modern period at Maggs begins around 1800. We have a fair size general stock of literature, and can usually offer a good range of first editions by the Romantic poets, Jane Austen, the Brontes, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, poets of the First World War, T.E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, Evelyn Waugh, Dylan Thomas, John Betjeman and their contemporaries.
Cookery is strongly represented from 2000BC to the present day. Joe McCann specialises in Irish literature, of all periods but especially 20th Century. Carl Williams runs our counter culture section, with a growing collection of agitprop, situationist and vanguardist material, with a heavy bias towards material from the Sixties.
We are particularly keen on association material, and are effective cataloguers and sellers of literary archives. Among the book illustrators of the period we specialise in the work of William Blake, Aubrey Beardsley, Max Beerbohm, Jack Butler Yeats, Edward Gordon Craig, Eric Gill and David Jones as well as the works of the principal private presses. This department now additionally incorporates Bibliography, offering important books on palaeography, typography, binding history, book trade history and general bibliography.
