Continental Books, Illuminations & Manuscripts
|
There are 787 titles in this department.
The continental department has two principal areas of speciality. The first covers illuminated manuscripts and miniatures, and text leaves, from the earliest times to the mid-16th century, with material from France, Spain, Italy, England and the German speaking world. Books of Hours, other liturgical works, and classical and medieval works are represented. In the field of continental printed books, we cover a period from the beginning of printing in the mid-15th century to the early 19th century.
We are particularly strong in books printed in France, Germany and Italy but also try to find fine books from the Iberian peninsular, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Particular areas include incunabula, important editions of Greek and Latin texts, renaissance and reformation, fine 18th century French books and bindings, illustrated books of all periods and important historical, philosophical and literary works. We aim to produce three catalogues per year, two devoted to printed books and one to illuminated miniatures and manuscripts.
