Ed Maggs, who doubles as the firm’s Managing Director, is responsible for the Modern department, which specializes largely in English language material after about 1800. Ed is an old-school hack bookseller who, while he has simulated expertise in subjects as diverse as the Special Theory of Relativity and fridge magnets, has got a deeper expertise in subjects including literary archives, books of the fin de siècle, Lawrence of Arabia, and books from the English Private Presses from Kelmscott to Gogmagog. He is particularly partial to the works of Max Beerbohm. Such education as he admits to has come from the books he’s handled over the more than thirty years he’s worked for the firm. He used to write a regular column for the defunct Rare Book Review, and has accepted an invitation to do a column for the senior rare book journal The Book Collector.
