Established in 1853, Maggs Bros. Ltd. is one of the world's largest
antiquarian booksellers. Serious about books without being stuffy,
we are proud of our traditions and history but are continually looking
to the future. We embrace the new age of information technology,
and combine with it a continuity which has seen us deal with successive
generations of collectors and with libraries over many decades.
We have a staff of over twenty, organised into seven largely autonomous
departments, giving us an enviable diversity and a remarkable range
of in-house expertise. We travel widely and exhibit at the principal
international antiquarian bookfairs, and can correspond in many
languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese
and Mandarin.
We are delighted to sell individual items to new customers, but
are at our best when building and sustaining long-term relationships.
We handle books and manuscripts of the very highest quality, and
act as advisors and booksellers to many of the world's finest collections,
both private and institutional, but also go out of our way to stock
books over a wide price range.
As well as selling books, we of course buy them, and do so around
the world. We take pride in being honest and generous buyers and
have the resources to deal with the largest of collections as well
as interesting individual items.
We are based in a pleasant town house in the heart of Mayfair,
convenient for the main London hotels, the auction houses and many
corporate headquarters. This website includes a tour of the building,
directions for finding us, a searchable database of some of our
stock, and an essay on the history of the business.
Our expertise in shipping rare books safely around the world is
all-but-legendary and this, coupled with the simplicity of electronic
payment, means that buying and selling across borders is today an
almost completely painless operation.
